I have a great warm-up activity for every day of the
school year. I have flash cards for 300 word usages. Each day my students
pick up half an index card by my classroom door. (I cut 2000 big cards in half
over the summer.) They then copy the word usage on the middle of the
unlined side and the definition and/or rule on the top of the lined side. After I check the roll, I give them an explanation, grammar rule, part of speech and/or the
definitions to the word usage example that they copied on their cards. They write the information I give them under the definition they wrote on the back of the card. (I grade the
cards ever so often). Then I use the big flashcards to review them every day. I
hold them up and have the students yell out the definitions. Sometimes we use
them to race or play around the world. I then provide them each with a ring to
hook all of the cards together. (I punched holes in the 4000 cards over the
summer too.) This arrangement of writing on the cards makes them little
flashcards, so the students can review and study the cards by themselves. Every
Friday I give them a Usage quiz over all of the words up to and including that
week's. By the end of the year, each of them knows 300+ word usages that
they recognize in many reading, writing, and testing situations. The kids will love shouting out in class, and they will be so
proud of their quiz grades. It gives them tremendous confidence. I will send you
the 300 word usages for
$19.99. Look for the 1000+ pgs document of flashcards to go with the usages.
