25pg. Yearly warm-ups - LATIN WORD PARTS

Latin root words, prefixes, suffixes:  I have a great warm-up activity for every day of the school year.  I have flash cards for 176 Latin word parts.  Each day my students pick up half an index card by my classroom door. (I cut 2000 big cards in half over the summer.) They then copy the Latin word part on the middle of the unlined side and the definition on the top of the lined side.  Next the students copy several example words with that particular Latin word part in it on the lines underneath the definition.  After I check the roll, I give them the definitions to the example words which they copy on their cards.  (I grade the cards ever so often). Then I use the big flashcards to review them every day.  I hold them up and have the students yell out the definitions.  Sometimes we use them to race or play around the world.  I then provide them each with a ring to hook all of the cards together.  (I punched holes in the 4000 cards over the summer too.) This arrangement of writing on the card makes them little flashcards, so the students can review and study the cards by themselves.  Every Friday I give them a Latin Quiz over all of the words up to and including that week's.  By the end of the year, each of them knows 176 Latin word parts that they recognize in many unfamiliar words which helps them decipher definitions in words from every subject and aspect of life.  I've been using them for several years, and I promise the kids love the shouting out in class, and they are so proud of their quiz grades.
